IFPT Overview

The I.F.P.T.’s primary emphasis is a sequence of training sessions, which teach advanced psycho-analytic techniques. A sequence of nine sessions provides the trainee with a breadth of content and a depth of supervised experience, and constitutes a formidable cumulative curriculum.

Sessions begin twice a year, - in the second weeks of February and October. Sessions are defined according to specific content (see below). One session, each year, is progressive; it is constructed to extend learning from a previous session. Trainings have three parts:

  • Four hour classes, that meet one Friday, each month
  • Weekly consultation group, for two to four participants
  • Weekly tutorial, with a course tutor, for individual training and supervision.

Selected journal chapters and papers are selected, to limit the amount of reading.

Trainees have typically completed a personal psychoanalysis and/or intensive, developmental, dynamic psychotherapy. If not, personal therapy, with a recommended therapist, is encouraged.

I.F.P.T. is truly an international group, because of the nature of its course content, and the origins of its students. Diagnosis and therapy techniques are primarily originated and based in England, Scotland, Argentina, Italy, Chile, France, Canada and the United States. The majority of trainees are from Canada and the United States; sessions sometimes include colleagues from other countries.

Enrollment is effected through the I.F.P.T. Application. The application is mailed to the applicant, following receipt of a resume, and by a statement of purpose and learning intent.
